Associate Vice President, Watershed Conservation

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has an exciting opening for an experienced conservation leader to manage its Watershed Conservation program. This position is a key member of the Conservancy’s leadership team and reports directly to WPC’s President and Chief Executive Officer. The position is based primarily in Indiana, PA, with some time in the Pittsburgh, PA office.

Under the direction of the President and C.E.O. and in partnership with executive management and the Board of Directors, the Associate Vice President is responsible for developing and leading Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s overall strategic direction for watershed conservation, which includes implementing and managing watershed assistance program projects, securing program funding and resources, and building and maintaining partnerships with like-minded organizations, and local, state, regional and federal agencies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate broad-based thinking about conservation, particularly watershed conservation and restoration, conservation science and energy impacts on watersheds. The Conservancy is seeking a collaborative, dynamic, proven leader who is able to build on a very successful program and take it to the next level. The position may also entail leadership over the Conservancy’s Conservation Services program.

We are looking for the following experience, education and competencies:

  • Masters degree or equivalent in watershed science, stream ecology, wetlands ecology or bio-hydrology, or other equivalent and relevant degrees such as conservation, policy, etc.;
  • 5 plus years in a watershed project management experience including managing projects to remediate watershed problems caused by non-point source pollution from mine or agriculture impacts, or equivalent and relevant experience in other conservation related fields;
  • 5 years management experience; some senior-level management experience strongly preferred;
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others to achieve goals;
  • A proven track record with partnership-building and successful fund raising;
  • Strong strategic planning and management skills; skill in financial and budget management;
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies;
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions; ability to think creatively and proactively;
  • Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills; employee development and performance management skills.

Fisheries Biologist

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), is seeking a skilled professional with fisheries biology and Geographic Information System expertise to assist with data management, data entry and data reporting in accordance with PFBC protocols, and also to conduct field investigations and studies to document the biological, chemical, and physical attributes of Pennsylvania’s unassessed waters. The position will be based at WPC’s Juniata and Potomac Region office in Hollidaysburg, PA and will be a full-time, contract funded position, with funding through September 2013.

Candidates should have a 4-year degree related to fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, fisheries management or a related field. Good communication skills via phone and also in person are required. Experience with Geographic Information Systems, the ability to identify fish and other aquatic taxa, and the ability to use various fish sampling gear are preferred. A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is required. We offer a competitive salary and benefits.

Stewardship Technician (seasonal)
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is seeking a Stewardship Technician (seasonal) to assist with the implementation of management plans at Bear Run Nature Reserve (BRNR) located in Mill Run, PA and other WPC properties.  The Stewardship Technician will report directly to the Land Steward, Land Conservation and Stewardship.

Position Duration:  Approximately May 29 through July 27, 2012

Location:  Mill Run, PA

Job description:  The primary focus of this position will be hiking trail construction, repair, and maintenance at BRNR.  Duties will include working independently and with volunteer crews to construct trail management practices such as waterbars, stone culverts, and stone steps.  Other projects may include invasive plant mapping and control, hemlock woolly adelgid monitoring, and boundary marking.

Qualifications:  We prefer applicants who are working toward - or have - a bachelor ’s degree in natural resource management or a related subject and have the ability to work in the field, traverse rough terrain, work in varying weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.  Experience with trail construction and invasive plant identification and control is strongly preferred.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to different locations throughout western PA.  Having a vehicle is a plus, as the main job site is located in a rural area.

Pay:  $10 per hour plus free, shared, on-site housing.

Graphic – Web Photography Intern

Falllingwater, the architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is seeking a summer intern to work with Museum Shop staff on upgrading the graphic quality of its web store.  The intern will report directly to the Museum Store Manager.

Position Duration:  Summer 2012

Location:  Mill Run, PA

Job description:  The primary focus of this position will be to upgrade the overall graphic quality of the web store, with an emphasis on product photography and graphic layout.  The intern will work closely with store management to understand the long-term artistic vision for the web store.  He/she will assist with developing photographic continuity throughout the web store by standardizing font, color and picture quality, using the Fallingwater main website for guiding design elements, and photographing new products for the store and re-photographing current products.  The intern will work closely with store associates to raise their level of understanding of product photography.     

Qualifications:  We are looking for applicants who have experience and training in product photography.  Must demonstrate proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 including Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, InDesign SC.5, and Acrobat X Pro software.  Must be willing to work solely with programs and equipment provided to intern while performing duties for the Museum Store.  Will not be able to utilize personal computer or software programs in performing work.  Exposure to CPOnline or other retail websites would be a plus.  Having a vehicle is a plus, as the job site is located in a rural area.

Job Description: This is a unique opportunity to work at a world-renowned architectural site. The collections intern will be involved in a variety of tasks related to the care and management of the Fallingwater collection. The intern works under the supervision of the Curator of Buildings and Collections.

Qualifications: We are looking for a graduate student with education or background experience in art history, museum studies, architectural history, history, historic preservation or related field.

Pay: $10 per hour plus free, shared, on-site housing.

Fallingwater Preservation Internship

Fallingwater, the architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is seeking a summer intern to work with the Fallingwater Collections.

Position Duration: Summer of 2012

Location: Mill Run, PA

Job Description: This is a unique opportunity to work at a world-renowned architectural site. The preservation intern will be involved in a variety of tasks related to the restoration and maintenance of the historic buildings at Fallingwater. This includes Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, and a variety of other historic structures throughout the 5,000 acre Bear Run Nature Reserve. The internship’s primary focus is hands-on masonry restoration of Fallingwater, involving stone repointing, cement plastering, and concrete patching. The student will also participate in other preservation projects throughout the summer, such as historic building assessments, inventories, documentation, and miscellaneous preservation repairs. The intern works under the supervision of the Curator of Buildings and Collections.

Qualifications: We are looking for a graduate student with education or background experience in historic preservation, historic building trades, or architectural history and experience in assessing and documenting historic structures. A candidate with hands-on experience in historic masonry or plastering or a related field is preferred.

Pay: $10 per hour plus free, shared, on-site housing.

Fallingwater Summer Landscape Internships

Fallingwater, the architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is seeking a summer intern to work with the Fallingwater Collections.

Position Duration: Summer of 2012

Location: Mill Run, PA

Job Description: This is a unique opportunity to work at a world-renowned architectural site. The focus of this internship is a design project for an element of the Fallingwater landscape. Past projects have included the design and enhancement of Fallingwater’s stepped canopy, the re-creation of historic cutting gardens, the creation of an herb garden for the Fallingwater Café, the installation of a native species planting on the hillside between the Main House and Guest House of Fallingwater, and many others. All these projects have an impact on the Fallingwater landscape and fit into our philosophy of a native species woodland garden, with some exceptions for historical accuracy. There is a series of design charrettes throughout the summer and a formal final presentation of your design with the Director and other professionals. In addition, there are daily landscaping tasks that will be performed under the supervision of Fallingwater’s Horticulture Specialist, along with on site mentoring with Dr. George Longenecker, retired landscape architecture professor from West Virginia University. This work is preformed outside and in a variety of weather conditions. The internship is very hands on, with activities like planting, weeding, pruning, etc.

Qualifications: We are looking for qualified students who are either in a masters program, their junior year of a four-year program, or fourth year of a five-year program in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Landscape Contracting, or related fields of study.

Pay: $10 per hour plus free, shared, on-site housing.
